What Is Progress Monitoring?

Progress monitoring is the regular, repeated measurement of a student's performance on specific skills to judge whether instruction is working and whether the student is moving toward their goals. It's the difference between "I think he's improving" and evidence.

In plain language

You measure the same skill the same way, often enough to see a trend, and you let the trend drive decisions — keep the intervention, change it, or intensify it. Done well, it catches problems in weeks instead of quarters.

Classroom example

A teacher probes a reading fluency goal twice a week with the same passage type. Spark plots the results; the line flattens for two weeks, so the teacher adjusts the intervention and shares the chart at the team meeting — with data, not impressions.
