IEP Social Skills Goal Examples
Greetings, turn-taking, cooperation, and self-advocacy goals.
Sample social skills goals following the measurable pattern. Social goals work best when the opportunity is engineered — the skill needs a structured chance to happen.
Turn-taking example
"During a structured game with one peer, the student will take turns appropriately (waiting, then participating) for 5 consecutive turns in 3 of 4 weekly sessions."
- Probe: structured game time
- Data: turns taken appropriately
- Track: consecutive-turn trend
Cooperation example
"During a small-group task, the student will contribute at least one relevant idea and accept a peer's suggestion without protest in 4 of 5 opportunities."
- Probe: small-group work periods
- Data: contributions and responses to peers
- Track: opportunities vs. successes
Self-advocacy example
"When work is too difficult, the student will use the taught script ('I need help with this, please') instead of leaving the task in 4 of 5 opportunities."
- Probe: naturally occurring challenges
- Data: script used vs. escape behavior
- Track: replacement behavior trend
