IEP Executive Functioning Goal Examples
Task initiation, organization, and self-monitoring goals.
Sample executive functioning goals. Because these skills are invisible by nature, the goals work by defining an external, observable evidence point — started within X minutes, checklist completed, materials prepared.
Task initiation example
"Given a written direction and a timer, the student will begin the assigned task within 2 minutes without adult redirection in 4 of 5 opportunities."
- Probe: each transition-to-work period
- Data: minutes to start, reminders given
- Track: initiation rate across the week
Organization example
"Using a visual checklist, the student will gather all required materials for the class period independently in 4 of 5 transitions."
- Probe: routine transitions, several daily
- Data: checklist items completed alone
- Track: independence trend
Self-monitoring example
"Given an assignment rubric, the student will self-check work against the rubric before submission and correct at least one item in 3 of 4 assignments."
- Probe: per-assignment submission routine
- Data: rubric self-check completed + changes made
- Track: self-monitoring trend
