What Are Modifications?

Modifications are changes to what a student is taught or expected to master — the content, the standard, or the complexity of the work — rather than how it's accessed. A modified curriculum genuinely differs from the general education one.

In plain language

An accommodation is a different route to the same destination; a modification is a different destination. Modifications matter when a student's disability means the standard itself isn't appropriate — and they carry implications for grading, credits, and diploma pathways, so teams document them carefully.

Classroom example

While classmates write a five-paragraph essay analyzing a novel, a modified task asks the student to identify the story's main events and write a short summary — the same book, a different level of analysis, per the IEP team's decision.
