What Is the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)?
LRE — Least Restrictive Environment — is the IDEA principle that students with disabilities are educated alongside their non-disabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate to their individual needs, with supplementary supports as needed.
In plain language
A student shouldn't be removed from the general classroom unless their needs genuinely can't be met there — even then, the team considers the least restrictive option that still works. LRE is a spectrum: full inclusion with supports, co-taught classes, resource room periods, and separate settings each serve different needs.
Classroom example
A student who struggles with math receives pull-out support for 30 minutes daily but stays in the general classroom for everything else — supported by accommodations rather than a separate placement.
