What Are IEP Goals?
IEP goals are the measurable annual objectives in a student's IEP — the specific skills the team commits to teaching and measuring during the year. A well-written goal states the skill, the condition, the level of performance expected, and how progress will be measured.
In plain language
A good goal answers: what will the student do, under what conditions, how well, by when, and how we'll know. "Will improve reading" isn't a goal; "Given a 2nd-grade passage, will read 60 words correct per minute in 2 of 3 trials by May" is.
Classroom example
A communication goal — "During morning meeting, will initiate a greeting to a peer in 4 of 5 opportunities" — becomes part of the daily routine: the teacher creates the opportunity, logs independent, prompted, or not yet, and the data shows growth over time.
